FAQ
Q1: Can students from the Department of Marine Resources take the Teacher Education Program?
A: No, they cannot. Starting from the 108th academic year, in compliance with the Ministry of Education’s implementation of the new 12-year national education curriculum and the new system of the university’s Teacher Training Center, only students from departments approved or filed with the Ministry of Education for pre-service teacher education programs are eligible (please refer to the list of approved departments in the NSYSU Teacher Training Center student handbook for the latest academic year). If students from our department wish to enroll in the Teacher Education Program, they must choose one of these approved departments as a minor or double major.
Q2: The maximum credit limit per semester is 25. If I have a minor or double major, can I take extra credits?
A: According to regulations, students may take up to two additional courses with approval from their department instructors. If both courses are 3 credits each, the maximum credit limit for the semester would be 31.
Note: The department chair sincerely advises against taking an excessive number of credits. University life offers many experiences beyond just studying. If you are highly interested in a particular department, consider an internal transfer or applying for a transfer through the Taiwan Comprehensive University System.
Q3: Can required courses from my double major be used to fulfill the elective course requirements of my primary major?
A: No, they cannot. According to Article 6 of the Double Major Regulations, students must complete all required courses for their primary major. Additionally, for students admitted from the 109th academic year onward, our department requires at least 46 elective credits, which cannot be fulfilled using required or elective courses from another department.
Q4: Can the Organic Chemistry course (3 credits) from the Department of Chemistry be used as a substitute for our department’s Organic Chemistry course (2 credits)?
A: Yes, it can. However, if the student is double majoring in Chemistry, they must take Organic Chemistry from both departments (3+2 credits). This is because the Chemistry Department has decided in a departmental meeting that students must complete the required credits for their original major, and this situation does not fall under the concept of credit substitution.
Q5: Credit substitution for retaking General Chemistry in our department
A: For students admitted before the 110th academic year, if they retake either General Chemistry (I) or General Chemistry (II), they may substitute it with the new 3-credit General Chemistry course listed in the 111th academic year’s curriculum. However, this 3-credit General Chemistry course cannot be used to substitute both General Chemistry (I) and (II) simultaneously.
Q6: Can undergraduate students take graduate-level courses and count them toward their undergraduate elective credits?
A: Yes. As long as the course is offered by a full-time faculty member of the Department of Marine Resources in the graduate program and the student earns a passing grade of 70 or above, the credits can be counted as elective credits.
Q7: Can elective Molecular Biology courses in our department be used to substitute the required Molecular Biology course?
A: No. After discussion with the instructor, it was determined that the difficulty levels of the courses differ. In principle, substitution is not allowed. It is recommended to follow the curriculum plan for the academic year and take the required course in the designated semester.
Q8: Can off-campus internship hours be counted for course credits?
A: No. Since our department does not offer an "off-campus internship course," internship hours cannot be counted toward elective credits. (According to Article 3, Section 1 of the university’s off-campus internship regulations: NSYSU Off-Campus Internship Regulations)
However, our department encourages students to pursue off-campus internships independently to combine professional knowledge with practical experience. Many students have interned at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium due to personal interest and learning goals.
Students interested in internships can apply for the university’s group accident insurance through the Student Affairs Office (the application form must be approved by the department chair and the responsible administrator).
Q9: Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement
A: Please refer to the NSYSU Siwan College website under "Student Regulations and Forms" → "Undergraduate English Proficiency Certification."
Q10: Does the university offer a digital learning platform?
A: Yes. Please refer to the NSYSU TLDR Digital Resource Platform or use the "Digital Network Academy" provided by the Institute for Information Industry's Digital Development Division.
Q11: If I have completed the “Fundamental Physics” course in my department, can I be exempted from taking "General Physics (I)" in my double major department?
A: If two courses have the same credit hours and syllabus but different course titles, students may submit a Double Major Credit Substitution Application Form for review. The double major department chair will determine whether to approve the credit substitution. Credit Substitution Form
Q12: Can students in the all-English undergraduate program take Chinese general education courses?
